About Us

Established in 2021, Meatless Monday Indonesia is part of the Meatless Monday global movement that dedicates Monday to human health and a sustainable planet. The movement is part of the Meatless Monday Initiative first introduced in 2003 by the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future (CLF). The movement has grown and is now being implemented in more than 40 countries in 22 languages. The Meatless Monday Movement in Indonesia does not just call for no meat on Mondays. It also encourages people to consume more of healthy, nutritious food and maintain a balanced diet by increasing their intake of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and legumes that come from Indonesia’s rich and diverse food. MMI Movement also invites people to adopt a healthy lifestyle and care for the earth.

Meatless days during World War I 

Creation of Meatless Monday
Advertising executive and public health advocate Sid Lerner and the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future(CLF) create the Meatless Monday campaign as a simple way to reduce saturated fat in the diet. They are inspired by the meatless days observed during World War I and World War II.

2010
Meatless days during World War I 
The movement spreads globally. More schools, institutions, and media outlets promote Meatless Monday for health and the environment.
2020
Meatless days during World War I 
The campaign’s reach skyrockets with the support of partners, Johns Hopkins, more global programs, a 20th anniversary, and a new resource center.
JHU CCP pilots Meatless Monday in Ghana, Indonesia and South Africa. Working through the Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs (CCP) country offices, Meatless Monday launches in Ghana and Indonesia using evidence-based social behavior change strategies to promote dietary shifts. These programs grow, and South Africa is added in 2024.
